The Pink Dress

(Continued from yesterday)

And now we come to The Pink Dress...

Contrary to what you might think (knowing my personality), not a lot of thought went into choosing this dress to cosplay. Chii wears so many beautiful dresses and outfits, that if I wanted to, I could spend countless hours evaluating all the dresses she wears, deciding which ones would be good to wear and why. But in this case, I simply picked this dress, without really considering any others, because it's pink, it's pretty, and I was able to find it at a cosplay shop (not all of Chii's dresses are available pre-made). I'm not a seamstress, and I don't know any seamstresses, so I'm committed to wearing a pre-made dress and not bothering to make my own (more on that later). In any case, I absolutely love the dress, and I doubt I could be more happy with a different one. It epitomizes the dual appeal of Chii herself - pretty, and sexy.

Naturally, I'm concerned about how I'm gonna look in that dress, because although I may be more feminine than the average guy, I don't exactly have the delicate, lithe frame of a young girl. So my expectations are tempered, but I still think I can look good, if not as good as Chii herself, and I could certainly do a lot worse (even for a crossplay, I'm convinced that if I'm careful, I can avoid total cosplay fail). Anyway, the jokes about ugly crossplays - fat sailor scouts and all that - usually result from ugly old men who seem to be unconcerned about their appearance, or intentionally trying to gross people out. My goal is not to look as if I'm wearing something I really shouldn't be wearing, but to actually look appealing in my cosplay, and I really do think I can pull it off.

Still, I've been looking at every picture I can find of others who have cosplayed this same pink dress, so I can see what I'm up against. I've found some that look pretty good. I've found others that are iffy, and one or two that are downright failworthy (see the last picture on my post last September). The iffy cosplays give me confidence that I won't be the worst looking cosplayer to ever wear this dress, and even the good cosplays fail to discourage me from giving it my best. I may not have the perfect figure for a girly cosplay, but I do have other things that even the majority of female Chii cosplayers lack.

First is the hair. I see an awful lot of wigs, and while they give the right look for the cosplay, it makes the whole ensemble seem more costumey and less real. My natural hair (at a length that even few females possess) is perfect for this cosplay, and not using a wig contributes to my cosplay philosophy of making it look like a real life version of the character and not simply a walking 3D cartoon.

My other natural advantage is my legs. Chii's got long, slender legs, and I've been told that my legs are one of my better features (and I believed it :p). Some Chii cosplayers opt for flesh-tone tights, but while they have certain practical advantages, I feel it detracts from the natural appeal of the cosplayer (underneath the cosplay). Not everyone's legs look good enough (or are shaped right) to pull it off, but again, I think that's one of my advantages.

I'm about to show you a bunch of different cosplayers wearing The Pink Dress, but first, let's talk about the craftsmanship of the costume itself. I see lots of variation in this dress. The same pattern, but different materials and alterations. I can't say how many of these dresses were handmade either by the cosplayer, someone the cosplayer knows, or someone the cosplayer commissioned to make the dress, and how many were pre-made and bought commercially (like mine was). I feel that in the cosplay community, there is a certain amount of pride in designing one's costume by hand. Many cosplayers have to, because the characters they want to cosplay aren't popular enough to have ready-made outfits available on the market. Or, having a complete outfit involves mixing and matching and adding and altering and whatnot.

My concern is that the quality of the costume must inevitably be taken into account when judging the aesthetic success of a cosplay. And where a costume may not be up to snuff, the cosplayer may argue that it was homemade, required lots of care and effort, and therefore deserves special consideration over a store-bought costume. And while this is true, it depends on what aspect of the cosplay experience you're concerned with, and this varies from person to person. I'm not a seamstress, I'm not a LARPer (a.k.a. adult make-believe) either, and I don't really do cosplay for the fun of it (although I hope that fun is a part of it). I'm a photographer, and an aesthetic artist, and in less flattering terms, a right vain bastard. So I care little who made the costume and how; what matters to me is how it looks in the end. And whether I end up looking fantastic or not, I hope nobody will slight me for taking "the easy way out" and buying my costume rather than making it. Because that's just not the point for me. The costume I have looks great, and much better than I could ever make on my own. Anyway, I'm a model, not a seamstress. :p So take that into account.

Now, onto the pictures!

I've always said, the best cosplays are done by the models who look like the character to begin with. That way, you have the likeness naturally, without having to reproduce it through costume accessories. I have the advantage of bearing at least a superficial likeness to Chii, but not everyone has that advantage, and it shouldn't stop you from cosplaying a character you really like. But there's a tradeoff to consider. Aesthetics versus accuracy.

The girl above doesn't have the right hair at all for Chii. She can choose to wear a wig to increase the accuracy of the cosplay. But wigs look much less "real" than real hair (obviously). Personally, I think she looks great with her natural hair. It's not accurate, but it's appealing, and perhaps more so than if she chose to wear a wig. It's a personal choice, and for some people accuracy is paramount, and certainly it's something to strive for in general, but you needn't think that a good costume depends on perfect accuracy. In the end, I'd go for appeal over accuracy. And you know you've got a special cosplay when those two qualities intersect.

Getting the right fit and proportions for a costume are difficult. If you're making it yourself, you can cater it to the model's exact measurements, if it's convenient to do so. With store-bought costumes, you gotta make your best guess on the size and then cross your fingers. I think a problem with a lot of costumes (particularly Chii's dresses) is that the cosplayer drowns in it. Would you wear the dress above to a formal ball? If the costume doesn't fit well, it comes off as being that much more costumey. Fortunately, my dress isn't too big for me, and I think it looks great on me, but I may have the opposite problem - more on that later.

In addition to the loose fit, this costume (as well as the one below) adds the option of thighhighs. Thighhighs are incredibly sexy, and the zettai ryouiki fashion is popular among the otaku crowd, but this particular outfit calls for bare legs - which can also be incredibly sexy, by the way. Yes, it's a matter of personal choice, but the bare legs (and feet) are one of the aspects of this particular outfit that appeal to me. Chii has beautiful legs, and she loves to show them off. There are other outfits she wears where thighhighs would be more appropriate (and accurate). I wouldn't say that they ruin this outfit, or are unforgivable (there are reasons for people to want to keep their legs covered), but I can't help rating them a bit lower than those cosplayers who dare to brave their bare legs.

This cosplay I like a lot. The dress does look costumey, but it looks appealing at the same time. And the model is, of course, attractive. One conflict with this outfit is that Chii doesn't wear shoes. And while it's an easy detail to change, I think the fact that she spends so much time barefoot is part of the appeal of her character. Again, there are other outfits she wears where nice shoes are appropriate (very elegant heels and the like), and it is therefore easy to want to accessorize every Chii cosplay with a pair of pretty shoes. Plus, the fact that you're usually not allowed to walk around barefoot at a convention (nor, perhaps, would you want to) kind of necessitates some footwear. My solution is to compromise with something that maintains the illusion of being barefoot - a pair of subtle flip flops perhaps - that can easily be tossed aside for pictures. All that having been said, the girl above has managed to choose a pair of shoes that goes well with the dress, and it's one of the better substitutes for being barefoot that I've seen.

Another problem I notice in a lot of cosplays is that the costume tends to emphasize certain elements, usually by making them bigger (and perhaps more cartoony) to draw attention to them. This is sometimes the case with the actual costume itself (which goes back to the loose fitting argument). In the cosplay above, I think the flowers (on her neck and thigh) are a little bigger than they really need to be, but it's not so bad as to ruin the costume. In Chii cosplays, the characteristic persocom ears are most often guilty of the embiggening effect. Those ears do vary greatly in size and quality, though, which I believe I talked about in my post last September.

Prettiness wins out here, in spite of the wig and tights. (What is she trying to hide?)

Always bonus points for bare feet. ;-)

I am definitely going to have to work on my poses, and learn how to carry the aura of Chii. I hope people don't expect me to actually act like Chii - after all, I'm a model, not an actor - but pose and poise are both important elements of looking like Chii!

Come to think of it, I'm not used to being popular with photographers at a convention. I wonder how popular I'll be, and whether I'll be able to handle the attention (hopefully more positive than negative).

This looks like a crossplay, and it's dreadfully costumey (and I have no idea how that dark blue petticoat is supposed to match the outfit), but it deserves recognition for its unbridled sensuality. Maybe Chii has a more submissive, restrained sensuality, but you see her prettiness all the time, it's refreshing to see someone not afraid to depict her sexy side.

Very pretty, but the ears here are definitely too big. I haven't got mine yet, but I'm hoping they turn out to be decent.

This is a decent cosplay, if you don't mind it looking like a cosplay - in spite of the heels, and the somewhat dark shade of pink. Also, the skirt could stand to be a bit shorter in the front, although I like that it doesn't touch the ground in the back. I think the train is supposed to touch the ground (and mine does), but I don't look forward to having it dragging all over the ground, getting nice and dirty. But this cosplay demonstrates the significant difference that having an attractive model makes.

On the other hand, it doesn't take being a supermodel to avoid total cosplay fail. Even if you're not your home town's beauty queen, you can still look decent in a cosplay, and have a good time. I suppose the key is knowing your strengths and weaknesses and being able to tell if something looks ridiculous on you (we all have certain styles we can pull off and others we can't), and having the sense not to wear it if it does. Unless you're one of those people, and your goal is to freak people out. I'm not in that camp, though. (I do freak people out, but for good reasons, not just for the hell of it. :p)

As you can see, there's a lot of variety out there, and I'm convinced I won't be the worst looking Chii to ever walk the convention halls - even despite my gender disadvantage. And unlike some Chiis, I'm not afraid to show a little skin.

Then again, that might be my problem, because I'm afraid of the consequences of showing too much skin. I have no intention of being lewd or indecent, but where skin is called for (and legal), I plan to deliver. The problem, however, is that the skirt on my dress is perilously short, and there doesn't seem to be any way to avoid showing my underwear. Luckily, this convention is pretty lenient with their cosplay rules, and while they don't seem to want anyone's underwear showing, there are alternatives that will likely (fingers crossed!) prove to be acceptable. But if I end up getting kicked out or forced to change, you'll know why. (Like everywhere else I've been kicked out of, the reason will be "too sexy").

To end on a positive note, here's what I would call a successful cosplay. It's not perfect, by any means, but it's effective. It successfully manages to be pretty. The cosplayer is attractive (without having to be flawless), there's enough skin showing, and the fact that it's a costume doesn't detract from your enjoyment of the cosplay. (Bonus points are awarded for the photo quality - both technically and artistically - actually being good). Observe:

And now, since you've done such a good job of indulging my cosplay mania, I'll give you what I'm sure you've been waiting all this time to see. A preliminary look at me, in my costume, wearing The Pink Dress. You only get a poorly lit low quality image at this time, because it hides all my flaws. :p

And one from the back, because my hair is just gorgeous.

See you in the spring!

More Chii Cosplay

As usual, I like to use some of the money I receive at Christmas to buy myself a nice gift - particularly the kind I'm less than enthusiastic about asking for. In this case, my Christmas gift to myself this year is [what will hopefully be] my cosplay costume for the anime convention coming up in [the very beginning of] April. It is a beautiful (and sexy) pink dress worn by Chii of Chobits in one of the images in the official Chobits art book, Your Eyes Only, which I got for Christmas last year. If you remember, I made the determination last September that I would cosplay as Chii, despite being gender-disadvantaged. To celebrate finally getting my hands on the dress I intend to wear, here are a bunch more pictures of Chii cosplayers!

Starting with a few leftovers from last time:

I am still quite fond of the "bandages" outfit, on account of it being hardly an outfit at all.

Very sexy. But hard to pull off in public. And particularly hard for a crossplayer, since it's pretty form-fitting, and there's so much flesh on display.

Speaking of skimpy outfits, I also like Chii's fashion sense when it comes to pajamas. Very casual, usually involving either a loose button-down shirt (liberally buttoned) or a long t-shirt, and a simple pair of panties (or not ;-).

Of course, Chii also looks great in a bikini. Even though you usually see her in a more modest one-piece school swimsuit.

Now, in every cosplay, there is a costume, and there is a model. Costume quality varies wildly; and not every cosplayer is exactly model material. Of course, a cosplay doesn't have to be perfect in order to be fun, but knowing me, I am drawn to the cosplays that are most beautiful and photogenic. And while a terrible costume will look bad even on a great model, I have to give the edge to the model over the costume, since ultimately I see the costume as an accessory to the beauty of the model and not the other way around. Thus, my top favorite Chii cosplays tend to be those that feature the prettiest cosplayers underneath.

You may be noticing a trend. A lot of Chii's dresses leave her shoulders exposed. I think it's a great style. Both elegant and sexy. And I totally dig the added emphasis on her collarbone.

There's no shortage of glamorous gowns and dresses for Chii to appear in. Pink is an obvious favorite.

Though if you're going all out with an elaborate style, you want to be careful that your dress is nice enough, so that it doesn't come off as being too costume-y.

One thing that is conspicuously lacking in a great many cosplay photos, is a sense of artistry. There are good reasons for this, as with cosplay, the focus is often on the craftsmanship of the costume, rather than making an artistic statement, and much of it is snapping pictures of friends and strangers you pass in the hallways. And while part of cosplay (for some) is the fun of acting the character, an impromptu scene in a hotel can't compete with a planned photoshoot. But true connoisseurs of the hobby have the option of seeking those opportunities out. The right photographic approach can make the difference between a cosplay snapshot and a potentially beautiful piece of fantasy art.

I must send my love out also to Freya, Chii's equally stunning sister and darker half.

So much pretty cosplay, and we haven't even gotten to The Dress yet!

Stay tuned for more!

Sex and Death

I was up late last night listening to a 1970 Neil Young concert on Rust Radio. I think Live at Fillmore East is great, and I'm glad it contains the highlights (namely, Down By The River and Cowgirl in the Sand), but I think it would be interesting to have a whole show, including Neil's acoustic set, where he does a bunch of Buffalo Springfield covers.

So anyway, I stayed up to catch the end of this show, and at the same time, I was studying H.R. Giger's artwork. Giger was, of course, the tortured genius behind the design of the xenomorph from Alien. In addition to the juxtaposition of organic and mechanical elements in his artwork, there is a disturbing combination of sex and death - skeletal forms engaged in erotic sex acts. When I finally got to bed, I mused to myself, I wonder if I'll have some kind of twisted nightmare after viewing all that creepy art.

By now, you've probably realized that I did have an interesting dream, or I probably wouldn't be relating this all to you. And indeed I did. It was related to The Walking Dead zombie apocalypse TV series I've been watching on AMC (the first season finished up last week). It's pointless to go into all the details of the dream, so I'll just tell you about the good part.

I was with a small group of people, and we were exploring an abandoned building. As far as we could tell, there were no walkers (zombies) around. We were in this fairly dark hallway, with partitions like the kind you see in a public restroom - in fact, there were some sections that were completely isolated like a toilet stall (though it was a hallway, not a bathroom, and there weren't actually any toilets). It seemed safe, so we explored a bit deeper, but then somebody spotted a zombie, so we rushed out and into a nearby room.

Except that I got caught behind. Everybody else was safe hiding in this other room, and I was there in the partitioned hallway, with not one, but two zombies sniffing me out. I got into one of the isolated sections (similar to a toilet stall), and I pulled myself up, trying to keep my feet away from the opening in the partition low to the floor. The zombies knew I was there and started banging on the door part of the partition that was between them and me. I was terrified.

Now, the significance of this experience is that previously, I saw the zombies almost as a novelty. Like an amusing gothic element from a popular horror fantasy. Like they were just walking corpses that were pretty easy to deal with - to stay away from, to neutralize, to avoid being eaten alive and turned into one of them. But with those zombies right there almost on top of me, I suddenly realized just how deadly and how terrifying they were. The smallest bite would mean the end for me - an end even worse than death. And they were right there. My respect for the zombies instantly shot up and I couldn't look at them in the same nonchalant manner again. Instantly, the horror became real for me, and it was no longer like a game of avoid-the-zombies - it was a fight for survival and relief from these nightmare creatures.

To make a long story short, I managed to knock out one of the zombies (don't remember how, or even if I was carrying any weapons), and skipped past the second one, making it to the safety of the room where the rest of my group was. Then some other things happened.

In a separate scene, later on, we were in some kind of prison yard or something, where there were a lot of people. And our group started shooting at them, trying to get them to respect our authority. I tried really hard to explain to the rest of my group how stupid that was, and that there was no logic at all behind it, and that it was a really really bad idea (we didn't have enough bullets to kill everyone there, they were alive non-zombie humans, and we were just pissing them off is all we were accomplishing). But I couldn't make them stop.

So it inevitably got to a point where we were running from this mob of pissed off people, and this is where the dream switched gears from death to sex, in a totally unpredicted, but ultimately pleasing manner. I kind of got behind the rest of the group, and found myself mixing with the mob of people chasing us - I guess I'm lucky I was arguing against my group's actions, because the mob didn't seem particularly concerned about catching me.

And then, as I was running down a long mall-like hallway (much brighter and wider than the one from the earlier scene), I looked off to the side and in an alcove I saw Emma Watson standing by a row of vending machines. I have no idea why Emma Watson showed up in my dream. I like her, but it's not like I've been thinking about her a lot lately (well, except for this one thing - incidentally, she's like 20 now, but if I told you how old she was in my dream you'd have me swinging on the gallows pole ;p). But that's beside the point - she was there. And she was wearing a pretty hot outfit - really short skirt (nothing underneath), and one of those tops that acts like a shirt, but it's really more like a bra, that ties in the center of the front - you see it in a lot of those "sexy costumes" because it barely covers anything more than what is legally necessary.

Well, when I saw her standing there, I was immediately attracted to her. Like, the way a paper clip is attracted to a powerful magnet. I forgot the mob and went straight for her. She took on a very inviting posture, essentially welcoming me to have my way with her. So I sat her down on a bench and pulled up her skirt (not much pulling was necessary ;-). She spread her legs, and I immediately went down on her in full public view of the disinterested mob rushing past us. It was really hot, but the dream soon ended, before I was able to get any further.

You might find it hard to believe, but I very rarely have dreams that are sexually explicit in any way, so each time it happens, it's a real treat for me.

(I'm thanking god Emma wasn't a zombie in my dream!)

Christmas Cheer

The idea of Christmas is a mutual gift exchange. So although I'm purchasing gifts for other people, I expect to get gifts in return. Perfect balance aside, the idea is that I come out even in the end. But that's assuming that whatever money I spent (and then later recovered in gifts given to me) could be afforded on gifts and leisure items. What if I needed that money just for basic survival? Through the gifts exchange, that money is transforming into leisure items I can live without. I'm crossing my fingers that I get enough cash just to make up for my losses.

I didn't ask for gifts anyway. I'd be happy not to receive any if it meant not having to buy any for anyone else. (I like buying my own things, thank you very much). But it's an unspoken agreement, and to sit it out is to spit in the faces of those who love you. What a splendid affair. My hands are tied!

Mermaid Princess

I just learned that an anime version of The Little Mermaid was made 14 years prior to the Disney version, in 1975. Wow. And in the anime version, the mermaid is not only blonde, but topless (imagine that!). And the story allegedly follows Hans Christian Andersen's story more closely than the Disney version (no they-lived-happily-ever-after here, folks). Do you have any idea how excited that makes me?

But the bad news is that it's probably impossible to get a hold of. This is a movie I don't just want to see, but would love to own. But the problem is that even if I found a copy, I couldn't trust that it's a good copy. Firstly, it's an old film that's not very popular, so it's not like it's been released and re-released on different formats and advertised and whatnot. I found a DVD copy on Amazon, that a lot of people seem to be happy with, but at least one review mentions that there have been some edits. The offending material? Violence and nudity, as you'd expect. And those are the parts that make this movie worth seeing, right?

I don't think the whole "uncensored" market was as big a deal in 1975 - on the other hand, they may not have felt the need to edit it back then, so maybe I could find an old VHS copy? But you know what else wasn't a big deal back then? Subs. I don't think there was much of a market for English audiences watching anime in Japanese in the seventies. I don't think anime itself was nearly that popular then as it is now. So how do I find an old movie like this that has Japanese audio, English subtitles, and no edits?

The obvious answer is to turn to the black market, but you're still in trouble if what you're looking for isn't very popular, or is really old, or isn't actually available in just the format you're looking for. I'm sure an unedited Japanese copy could be found, but what are the chances anyone has ever produced English subtitles for it? And with bootlegs, you can never be completely sure of what you're getting. I can't be any more sure than with the official DVD release that I won't be getting an edited copy of the movie. And having not seen it before, I might not even realize it.

Not that that makes it okay. I hate few things more than being duped into seeing something censored without realizing it. I saw the original Last House On The Left on account of a lot of cult hype I had heard, but my reaction to it was underwhelming. Then I discovered that I almost certainly watched an edited version of the movie, with all the best parts cut out. (Why is it always the best parts that they cut out?). Which just ruined my whole experience of the movie.

So I come across something like this, and it happens from time to time, and I get all excited, and then I think, it's all just pipe dreams. I'll never get my hands on what I'm looking for...

The movie is actually viewable on YouTube I see, but it's in English of course. (Maybe I'll watch it anyway).

Here are some screenshots, courtesy of this wonderful English fansite.

Here's another version of the story from 1975. It's pretty good, too.
